Deaf and Hard of Hearing Driver Communication Aids
On, Sunday April 15, 2012, the Town of Ramapo announced its partnership with RILC to distribute Communication Visor Cards to drivers who are hard of hearing or deaf. The purpose of the Visor Cards is to facilitate communication during a traffic stop between a Police Officer and a deaf driver. It also assists
the deaf driver in understanding the desired actions during the car stop to reduce misunderstanding and confusion. “Our card was designed based on other successful models that are being used by deaf drivers throughout the Country,” said Councilman Daniel Friedman. Ramapo is the second municipality in Rockland to partner with RILC in this important endeavor, following Clarkstown in 2011 to partner with RILC in this important endeavor. The Town of Ramapo Hard of Hearing Visor Cards are available in the Supervisor’s Office at Ramapo Town Hall, 237 Route 59, Suffern or by calling 357-5100, or from the Rockland Independent Living Center located at 873 Route 45, New City, N.Y. 10956 or by calling 624-1366.
